Question 1. What is RCT3?

Answer 1. RCT3 is an amusement park simulation/strategy game.

Question 2. What are the system requirements of RCT3?

Answer 1.

What they say-

Operating System: Windows(r) 98/Me/2000/XP (Windows(r) XP recommended)
Processor: Pentium? III 733 MHz or compatible (Pentium? 4 1.2 GHz or compatible recommended)
Memory: 128 MB RAM; 256 MB for XP (256 MB; 384 MB for XP recommended)
Hard Disk Space: 600 MB free CD-ROM Drive: 4X CD-ROM or faster (8X or faster recommended)
Video: Any ATI Radeonâ„¢ or GeForceâ„¢ 2 with 32MB or higher; or other video card with 32MB and hardware T&L (ATI Radeonâ„¢ 64 MB SDR or GeForceâ„¢ 2 Pro or other video card with 64 MB or more memory and hardware T&L recommended)*
Sound: Windows? 98/Me/2000/XP-compatible 16-bit sound card*
DirectX?: DirectX? version 9 (included) or higher

What I say-

OS: Windows XP with Service Pack 2
Processor: atleast P4 2 Ghz (P4 3GHz or more recommended)
Memory: atleast 512 MB of Ram (1GB or more recommended)
Video: atleast radeon 9200 or geforce fx 5200 (radeon 9600XT or geforce 6600GT or better recommended)

Question 3. Will my intel graphics chip work?

Answer 1. Not very well, if at all. Intel graphics chips do not support hardware T&L. It would be wise to invest in a new video card.

Question 4. I only have 256MB of memory, will that work?

Answer 1. Maybe. To get a great experience without as much lag you need atleast 512MB (1GB or more recommended).

Question 5. I don't have an AGP or a PCI Express x16 expansion slot on my motherboard!

Answer 1. Either get a new motherboard or computer that has a PCI Express (don't confuse this with PCI) expansion slot so you can get a next gen video card or just live with what you have. You may be able to get a pci card that will atleast run the game.

Question 6. I can't see water.

Answer 1. You do not have a graphics chip/card that supports hardware T&L.

Answer 2. For players with certain Intel graphics cards and the retail version of the game with or without Update 1a the water will not appear in game. This is caused by the fact that these Intel cards handle lighting effects slightly differently to cards from all other manufacturers. This was tracked down too late to be included in Update 1a and so as a temporary measure we have provided the solution here in the form of a 10k byte zipped file (153k byte uncompressed) which contains a replacement for the RCT3.dgf file shipped with the retail game. Please note that UNLESS you are experiencing this problem with water and have an Intel graphics chipset in your PC then we DO NOT recommend you use this new file, it resolves this one issue only and will be included in a future Update.

Steps to get a fix for the problem:

  1. Download the zipped file by clicking on this link and choosing to save the file to anywhere on your PC.

  2. Open the RCT3 folder that was created when RCT3 was installed on your PC (this is usually C:\Program Files\Atari\RollerCoaster Tycoon(r) 3 unless you chose another location)

  3. Rename the file in that folder called RCT3.dgf to RCT3_old.dgf as a back up – it is unlikely it will be needed but if you start experiencing any problems after switching to the new version of this file then you can delete the new file and rename the old file back to RCT3.dgf.

  4. Unzip the downloaded file into the install folder and check that a new RCT3.dgf file has successfully been placed in that folder.

You can then run the game as normal and will see water.

Question 7. I can't see reflections.

Answer 1. You do not have a graphics chip/card that supports hardware T&L. To enjoy reflections you need to get a new card.

Question 8. How do I raise objects?

Answer 1. Hold down on the shift key while moving your mouse up and down.

Question 9. My game lags while placing a ride, but is fine when I'm not placing a ride.

Answer 1. This is normal. If you have Wild and you are experiencing especially long lag time when placing rides you should get the patches.

Question 10. How do I check my frames per second (fps)?

Answer 1. Click on a peep. Rename them fps. A frames per second counter will appear in the top left corner of the screen.

Question 11. I'm only getting X amount of frames per second. Is that ok?

Answer 1. As long as the picture is "choppy" your framerate is acceptable.

Question 12. I'm experiencing lag on a good video card!

Answer 1. Perhaps your drivers are outdated. Check for the latest drivers (for nvidia go to http://nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp and for ati go to http://ati.com/support/drivers.html). Please see "Question 19. How do I install new drivers for my video card?"

Answer 2. You may have fastwrites on. Some people experience better performance when this is turned off. Please note that PCI Express does not have fast writes.

nvidia- Normally the nvidia drivers don't allow you to change this setting so go to http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=911 and download nvTweak. The only thing that nvtweak does is to enable certain menu items in your driver menu which have been left out by the coders. The file you download is an exe-file that prompts you to extract the file
somewhere. By default it will extract it to your desktop, in a directory called Guru3D.

Start the exe-file enclosed in this directory, click "Enable All" in the bottom of the program (you can also just enable the "AGP Settings Page" on the right, but the other options getting enabled are so neat), and exit it (you may delete the program now if you would like).

a. Right-click on your desktop, select "Properties".

b.Click on the "settings" tab and then click the "advanced" button.

c. Click the tab with your graphics card's name.

d. Now go to the newly added "AGP Settings" section of the drivers menu on the left.

e. Uncheck "Fast Writes" (if you go to check, it will still be ticked until you reboot)

f. Reboot

Please note that some motherboards have fast writes enabled in the bios. Be sure to check your bios.

ati- NOTE: ati radeon 9200 and 9600 users might get a serious slow-down when disabling fast writes because some have problems running without fast writes on.

a. Right-click on your desktop, select "Properties".

b.Click on the "settings" tab and then click the "advanced" button.

c.Click on the "SmartGart" tab and then set fast-write to off.

d.Click "Apply" and then "OK". You may have to restart.

Please note that some motherboards have fast writes enabled in the bios. Be sure to check your bios.

Question 13. How do I check my bios to see if fast writes is enabled?

Answer 1. First you have to get into it. Usually you get into your BIOS by rebooting, and when the first screen comes up, showing your processor information, detecting your harddrives and counting up your RAM, hit the delete key on your keyboard. Some premanufactured computers, and even some motherboards, have alternate keys to press to get into BIOS. Usually these are F2 or F10 keys. If you're unsure which key to hit, look at the start-up screen for information on this. It's usually printed there. If you don't see the screen you can usually find the information in your motherboard manual.

There should be options located inside of your bios. Every bios is different so I won't be able to explain how to do it. If you can't find it refer to your motherboard manual.

Question 14. My computer/game crashed and a blue screen pops up for a split second and my computer restarted.

Answer 1. You need to disable automatic restart after a serious error. To do this go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System. Click on the advanced tab. Under the Startup and Recovery Box click Settings. In the window that comes up uncheck the box by Automatically restart. Next time you see the blue screen of death, write down the complete error message and look it up on the Microsoft Knowledge Base. If you need further help, please ask on the forum.

Question 15. There are weird lines and blotches all over my screen when I play RCT3.

Answer 1. Your video card is probably overheating. Check the temps on your card.

Answer 2. Make sure the fan on your video card is spinning at the correct speed and that it is not clogged up with dust. There may be a recall on the fan assembly so be sure to check. Also, make sure the heatsink/fans assembly is seated correctly.

Question 16. How can I restore my screen resolution after changing it to an unsupported setting?

Answer 1. If the game won’t run properly because you selected the wrong screen resolution, navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\Application Data\Atari\RollerCoasterTycoon(r) 3 and delete the options.txt file. Start the game, and everything will be just like new.

Question 17. Is there anything else I can do to improve my fps?

Answer 1. In the system BIOS I recommended disabling hidden refresh, VGA palette snoop, DAC snoop and shadowing options, Video BIOS Shadowing or VGA Shadowing, "Video Memory Caching Mode" (usually found under something like: "Advanced" ---> "Chip Configuration") should be set to UC (UnCacheable) rather than UCSW (UnCacheable Speculative Write-combining), fast writes (beware, if you have a radeon 9200 or 9600 because this might cause slowdown).

Answer 2. You can try disabling your sound card (please note that if you disable your sound card you will have not sound coming out of your speakers).

a. Go to Control Panel and click on system.

b. Click the "Hardware" tab.

c. Click "Device Manager".

d. Find your soundcard on the list.

e. Right-click it, and choose "Disable".

f. Check how the game runs. If you only see an increase of about 5 fps, your sound card is probably not the problem so you can go back and enable it again. If you get many more fps, you should try getting new drivers for your card. Onboard soundcards usually create a massive bottleneck if the drivers haven't been updated. Even with updated drivers you might see that it's still causing trouble. Try inserting another soundcard (soundblaster 16 or newer) instead of your onboard card, and see how it goes. Remember to disable onboard sound when using an add-on card.

Answer 3. Try turning down the graphics a little bit. Be sure to have anti-aliasing and aggressive z bias off.

Answer 4. Get rid of all the peeps or pause the game while you are trying to move around.

Question 18. I experience page-tearing (your screen seems to be showing half of one frame while still showing half of the previously rendered frame for a split-second or you see horisontal lines rolling up and/or down
your screen).

Answer 1. You need to enable vsync.

a. Right-click on your desktop, select Properties.

b. Click on the Settings tab and then click the Advanced button.

c. Click the tab with your graphics card's name.

nvidia- Click on Performance and Quality Settings. Select Advanced Settings in the box. In the list, find the vsync (Vertical Sync) setting. Uncheck Application Controlled and move the slider to the On position.

ati- Here you should be able to change the settings for both Direct3D and OpenGL (not at the same time, though). You should probably check your settings for both.

Question 19. How do I install new drivers for my video card?

Answer 1. How to COMPLETELY remove drivers (both ati and nvidia)-

nvidia drivers (originals) can be removed from "Add/Remove Programs" in your Windows Control Panel. Customized drivers (like the Omega drivers) usually have their own uninstaller which you should be able to find in your start menu.

ati drivers (originals) can usually be removed from from "Add/Remove Programs" in your Windows Control Panel. Customized drivers like the Omega drivers usually have their own uninstaller, which you should be able to find in your start
menu.

Installing nvidia-drivers:

Download the drivers and unpack them on the desktop so they will be easy to find. Most driver downloads are just an exe file. If they're from nvidia's website, they will unpack and install themselves. If you're using the Omega drivers you might be required to run the exe file which unpacks the files, and then you have to go find the new exe file you just unpacked and run that when you've done the following. You can download the drivers from here--------> http://nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

a. After uninstalling the old drivers restart your computer.

b. When the computer has started up you might get a message to install the drivers. Click cancel.

c. Go to where you saved the drivers and double click on the file.

d. Reboot.

Installing ati drivers:

Download the drivers and unpack them on the desktop so they will be easy to find (you usually don't need to unpack ati drivers). You can download the drivers from here--------> http://ati.com/support/drivers.html

a. After uninstalling the old drivers restart your computer.

b. When the computer has started up you might get a message to install the drivers. Click cancel.

c. Go to where you saved the drivers and double click on the file.

d. Reboot.

Question 20. How do I post my dxdiag?

Answer 1. Go to Start. Click on Run and type in "dxdiag" (without the quotes). In the dxdiag window click on the Save All Information button. Save the document to a place you will remember (your desktop for example). Now, open the saved document. Select from the top to the bottom of the parts that are pointed out below and and copy them. Go to the reply form on the forums that you were sent from and paste it there. Please note that on my forums you can attach the file or post it in full since there is not a restriction. For those forums that do limit on size it may be desirable to upload it to my forums or a free upload service and link to it.

Question 21. Are there any trainers for RCT3?

Answer 1. Yes. There is one, but it doesn't work if you have patches or an expansion pack.

Question 22. Are there any cheat codes for RCT3?

Answer 1. Yes. You can find an updated list of cheat codes here.

Question 23. Are there any patches for RCT3?

Answer 1. Yes. Official updates for RollerCoaster Tycoon? 3 are delivered two ways: click the UPDATES button found on the game's autorun screen (which is displayed when you insert the game-disc into your CD-ROM drive); or when you click the Check For Updates shortcut found in the Windows START menu under START > Programs > Atari > RollerCoaster Tycoon(r) 3. Downloads have also been made available for those who cannot access the internet from the PC on which they play RCT3.

If you choose to download an Update, you need to select the correct one (for your territory and to update from either the standard retail version or an Updated version of the game) - please be aware that re-mastered versions of the game are now in retail which include Update 1 and in future will include Update 2, which complicates this decision.

To avoid the possibility of any confusion we strongly recommend that you use the UPDATES button found on the game's autorun screen; or click the Check For Updates shortcut found in the Windows START menu under START > Programs > Atari > RollerCoaster Tycoon? 3. This will automatically detect which game version you have and download the latest one if necessary.

Question 24. How do I import my RCT 1 and 2 coasters into RCT3?

Answer 1. To import tracks from previous RCT games click on the Import Tracks button in the rides menu (It is the bottom button). You then need to use drop down box to select the drive with your track designed on (This is usually C:\). Then click on the search button. RCT3 will then search that drive for any previous track designs. This can take some time depending on your machine specifications and the size of your hard drive. The great majority of tracks will work with no problems – there are some differences in the physics (e.g. friction values) between RCT3 and the previous games which may mean you have to tweak your designs in some rare cases. If you find you are having problems then there are a couple of cheats added to UPDATE 1a which could help you: Rename any peep ‘Andrew Thomas’ to reduce the friction in RCT3. Rename any peep ‘Andrew Gillett’ sets friction in RCT3 to zero. Like all cheats, they are operative for the current game session only.

Question 25. Why does RCT3 crash when I try to save a game?

Answer 1. This problem has been reported with some graphics cards (for example Nvidia GeForce 2 or 3) that were purchased some years ago and still use the original software drivers. When RCT3 saves a game it creates a thumbnail image of the scene, and this can cause a crash with the version of the graphics drivers shipped with the graphics cards when purchased. If you are experiencing this problem then you should update your drivers to the latest version.

Question 26. How do I get my VIP to visit my coasters and complete a scenario goal?

Answer 1. You need to ‘stage manage’ the VIP’s visit by creating a route for the VIP to follow, which takes in all the things that the scenario objective tells you that he or she wants to see. If you don’t do this, then the VIP will simply decide for themselves what areas of your park to visit, and may therefore miss spotting the scenario goals even if they are present and correct. Your manual explains how to create waypoints for a VIP visit via the ‘Setup Route’ button on the right of the VIP objectives in the Scenario Objectives dialog box. In order to get the VIP to visit any of your rides and attractions and hence complete the objectives, you need to CREATE A WAYPOINT ON THE TICKET / ENTRANCE BOOTH OF THAT ATTRACTION, nowhere else.

Question 27. Why does my Looping / LIM Coaster not connect properly?

Answer 1. The Looping / LIM coaster track type has two versions of the vertical twist. One is accessible via the main UI (clicking on ‘tight curve left/right’ whilst going vertical), the other via the ‘specials’ tab (also while going vertical). The piece in the specials tab is an odd number of game meters in height compared to the other track pieces, meaning that if you use an odd number of these pieces throughout your track, the track will end up being 'off by one'
when trying to connect back to the station. The solution is to either use an even number of these pieces when building a coaster, or refrain from using them and instead use the larger pieces available using the main UI.

Question 28. Where can I download coasters?

Answer 1. You can download coasters at http://atari.com/exchange/rct3 or from this site at pvcsnathan's rct3 exchange.

Question 29. Is there a demo for RCT3?

Answer 1. Yes. You can download it at ftp://ftp.download-center.com/international/rct3/RCT3_DEMO_v010.exe.

Question 30. Are there any videos for RCT3?

Answer 1. Yes. Type RCT3 Video into Google.

Question 31. Can I import scenery into RCT3?

Answer 1. Yes, but it is unsupported by Atari.

Question 32. Are there any expansions for RCT3?

Answer 1. Yes, there is an expansion called Soaked! that feature pools, tunnels, and water rides. There is also an expansion called Wild! which features animals.

Question 33. Where can I download RCT3?

Answer 1. You can not legally download RCT3. Software piracy is the illegal reproduction and distribution of software applications, whether for business or personal use. In the United States and many other countries, copyright law provides for severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted material. Copyrighted material includes, but is not limited to, computer programs and accompanying sounds, images, and text. Under U.S. law, infringement may result in civil damages of up to $150,000 and/or criminal penalties of up to five years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

Question 34. Why can I not build tunnels?

Answer 1. You have not downloaded the latest patches.

Question 35. What video cards will work best for RCT3 (please don't get this confused with what video cards will work)?

Answer 1. Atleast Radeon 9800 or Geforce 6800.

Question 47. What video card will work in my computer?

Answer 1. The first thing you need to do is identify the expansion slot on your motherboard by referring to the picture below.
motherboard slots
Those are all of the most common types of slots (there are some much older ones that I didn't want to search for a picture of). In order to get a video card you need a PCI slot, a PCI Express x16 slot, or a AGP slot. Since the PCI slot has died, (video cards have quit being made for it) it is a good idea to invest in a motherboard with a AGP or PCI Express x16 slot if you are getting a new motherboard. If you have just a PCI slot you can get a video card but it probably will not run this game.
